Intuition – A J. Cole Perspective

Intuition defined through J. Cole's lyrics

Intuition is defined as an ability to know something directly without analytic reasoning, bridging the gap between the conscious and subconscious parts of our minds, and between instinct and reason. Sometimes we refer to intuition as our “gut” feeling or “going with our heart”. The sudden fluctuation of our heartbeat and the intense wrenching of our stomachs are the results of the psychological impulses of intuition translated into physical signals for us to register.

Without instinct and logical reasoning, we are unable to make the best decisions for ourselves, our families or our careers. Intuition is often avoided by many because we are taught to think rationally, analytically and subjectively. We are often afraid to follow our hunches, and the strange messages our instincts relay to us because we don’t trust ourselves. But what we fail to realise is, no one looks out for us as much as our subconscious mind and instincts.

In a world created with balance, located at the perfect distance from the sun with a perfectly distant moon, balance is the optimal solution in all areas of life. One day we are told something is bad for us, only to be told it is good for us the next.

Why is a balance not promoted?

In his book “Blink”, Malcolm Gladwell demonstrates the equality found in two extremes with the quote:

“There can be as much value in the blink of an eye as in months of rational analysis”.

Sometimes our instincts can tell us something that would take months of conscious thinking and analysis to understand.

J. Cole is an artist who conveys balance, conveys a message, and makes a very relative point with each of his tracks. He combines the intuitive feelings he has for a better future with the deep thought and rational analysis that comes with meditation. Silence helps with avoiding distractions during our conscious thought processes while our subconscious mind fills the gaps within louder environments.

Combining the two extremes, we understand that fear is both irrational and necessary, emotions are uncontrollable and expressive, faith is the full belief in something with rational questioning that results in clarifying and comforting answers, and that ideas don’t have an expiry date.

Every day we learn and grow in wisdom. You may be learning something just from reading this post (I certainly hope so!).

Knowledge is power, meaning our life experiences and learning should increase us in strength, to the point where even death no longer scares us.

Do you trust your intuition? Have you learned to balance your intuition with rational analysis?
